The Griddy is making its way into FIFA 23 as a player celebration, and it’s ready to induce more rage than conceding a goal ever could.
Over the years FIFA has added many popular celebrations you can perform once you’ve scored a goal. Celebrations are a fun way to show who’s in charge but can also send you into a spiral if you’re on the receiving end.
From Cristiano Ronaldo’s ‘Siii’ to Paul Pogba’s dab, EA Sports has incorporated countess player celebrations into the FIFA franchise, making the games and footballers as close to their real-life personas as possible.
Now, the Griddy dance will become the next iconic celebration to become digitally immortalised in FIFA 23, after it first became popular amongst NFL players and then in football thanks to Chelsea’s Christian Pulisic.
It’s not the first time the Griddy dance will appear in a game either, as it also went viral in Fortnite when the Get Griddy emote got released in Chapter 2 Season 6.
Like most other celebrations in FIFA, you’ll need to enter a specific button sequence after scoring a goal in order to do it.
It might sound simple, but it’s not, so listen carefully, as one general rule applies across all consoles: to perform the Griddy celebration press and hold R2 and then flick the right stick up twice.
- PlayStation 4 and 5: R2 + flick right stick up, flick right stick up
- Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S: RT + flick right stick up, flick right stick up
- Nintendo Switch: ZR + flick right stick up, flick right stick up
Unlike Ronaldo’s celebration, that can only be done by him, any player can perform the Griddy after scoring. So, once you’ve followed the instructions to the T, the scorer will break into the Griddy, putting their fingers up to their face to create OK symbols on their eyes.
Also, be careful not to accidentally press A/X after scoring, as this will trigger the player’s signature celebration, if they have one.
With women’s leagues and teams, and everything else that’s new in FIFA 23, it’ll be exciting to see more and more female footballers also get their own in-game celebrations.
Chelsea striker Sam Kerr has already made history by featuring on the global cover of a FIFA game. On top of that, she’ll also perform her signature celebration in FIFA 23, where she first performs a handstand, before transitioning into an inch-perfect backflip.
FIFA 23 early access is already underway, ahead of its official launch, so if you’ve copped the Ultimate Edition of the game, why not jump in and practice the Griddy.
FIFA 23 officially launches for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, PC, and Stadia on September 30.
