Warner Bros. has finally announced a new Mortal Kombat game for the series’ 30th anniversary but it’s neither a fighter nor a console game.
If you guessed mobile game, then we’re afraid you’re right. If you think the idea of a Mortal Kombat role-player sounds neat, and the sort of thing they probably should have done decades ago, we can’t say you’re wrong, but while one does now exist it’s mobile only.
The good news is that the game, called Mortal Kombat: Onslaught, is by series creators NetherRealm Studios, which may in part explain why they haven’t announced any other new games recently.
Onslaught is due out next year, and it actually does sound quiet interesting, as it has you controlling a team of fighters in real-time battles, in what is described as a ‘strategic team-based collection RPG.’
Sadly, the most important word there is ‘collection’ which implies gacha mechanics, so it’s almost certainly filled with microtransactions and random loot drops.
Mortal Kombat does have enough characters to make that feasible and, again, its only a wonder they and other fighting game developers didn’t think of this earlier.
There has been considerable unrest in the Mortal Kombat community recently, as the franchise’s 30th anniversary was in August and it passed by with barely a mention.
NetherRealm has given no indication of when to expect the next mainline entry and while they have hinted that Mortal Kombat 12 is on the way the hint was vague enough that it could also be referring to a new spin-off.
It’s even possible Onslaught was what they were teasing, but they must’ve known most fans wouldn’t be happy with that. Although if you are interested you can sign-up at the official website for more info and news of the inevitable beta.
