Whether it’s The Last Of Us 3 or something new, Neil Druckmann is forming a whole writing team to approach his next game like a TV show.
Aside from its The Last Of Us multiplayer spin-off, the future of Naughty Dog remains a complete mystery. There has been fan speculation of the studio working on a new IP, but the most recent rumours say a third The Last Of Us is also in production.
There’re claims of a new Uncharted being in development as well, but it’s apparently being handled by another studio entirely.
Naughty Dog itself is staying coy about its future projects, but studio co-president and The Last Of Us creative director Neil Druckmann has provided a bit of insight into how he’s approaching his next project more akin to a TV show.
Druckmann has already recruited TV people to work on his games, such as enlisting Halley Gross (whose credits include Westworld) to help co-write The Last Of Us Part 2.
For his next game, Druckmann seems eager to take things to the next level by assembling an entire writer’s room. So, the game’s story and script won’t be penned by just him and one other co-writer, but a whole team of writers in the same fashion as a TV show.
This comes via an interview with The New Yorker, which cites Druckmann as saying his next game, be it The Last Of Us Part 3 or something else entirely, will be ‘structured more like a TV show.’
His statement almost makes it sound like the game will be episodic in a similar vein to Telltale’s titles like The Walking Dead and The Wolf Among Us.
However, Druckmann may have already shut that possibility down, explaining that it’s more about ‘making our games in an even more collaborative manner.’
There’s no telling when we’ll learn something more concrete about Druckmann’s next project, especially when so little is still known about The Last Of Us multiplayer game, which is presumably further along in development.
Aside from the one piece of concept art Naughty Dog shared, details on the spin-off are thin. Although it sounds like it’ll feature microtransactions since the studio hired a principal monetisation designer.
This could make it one of Sony’s upcoming live service titles. The company is eager to have 10 such games out by 2026, but has yet to formally announce any.
